Knowledge: Purple Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas L.)

Purple Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas L.)

Purple sweet potato with scientific name Ipomoea batatas belongs to the family Convolvulaceae. Purple sweet potato originates from South America and is now cultivated in many parts of the world. It is an easy-to-grow, high-yielding plant, characterized by long tubers, smooth skin, and distinctive purple inner part.

Purple sweet potato is high in anthocyanin, a natural pigment that is useful as antioxidant. The primary anthocyanins in purple sweet potato are peonidin and cyanidin. In addition to antioxidants, they are packed with fiber, vitamin C and potassium.

HEALTH BENEFITS

1. Anti-Neuroinflammatory Potential

Study showed that purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas Linn, Convolvulaceae) extract (IBE) attenuated neuroinflammatory responses in Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated BV-2 microglia cell by inhibiting excessive production of pro-inflammatory mediators such as Nitric oxide (NO), Inducible NO synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in a concentration-dependent manner. The anti-neuroinflammatory potential of IBE may be related to strong antioxidant properties of purple sweet potato.

Fig 1: Effect of IBE extract on NO Production in LPSstimulated BV-2 microglial cells. BV-2 cells were treated with IBE extract at various concentrations (20, 40, 80 and 100 µg/ml) with or without LPS (5 µg/ml) for 4 h. The nitrite in the culture supernatant was evaluated using Griess reagent. Data are presented as the mean ± S.E.M. (n = 3) for three independent experiments. # p < 0.001, when compared with control group. **p < 0.01 and ***p< 0.001, when compared with LPS alone treated group by Student t-test (IBE: I. batatas-ethylacetate, LPS: Lipopolysaccharide)

Fig 2: Effect of IBE extract on iNOS and COX-2 expressional levels in LPS-stimulated BV-2 microglial cells. The expression levels of iNOS and COX-2 production in the LPS (5 µg/ml)-stimulated BV-2 cells by various concentration of the IBE extract (50 and 100 µg/ml) was monitored by immunoblot analyses with the specific antibodies against iNOS and COX-2. The internal control used was β-actin. (IBE: I. batatasethylacetate, LPS: Lipopolysaccharide

Fig 3: Effect of IBE extract on TNF-α production in LPS-stimulated BV-2 microglial cells. Suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-α expression by IBE extract was measured with ELISA test. BV-2 cells were treated with IBE extract at 50 and 100 µg/ml with or without LPS (5 µg/ml) for 4 h. The TNF-α in the culture supernatant was evaluated using a murine TNF-α ELISA kit. Data are presented as the mean ± S.E.M. (n = 3) for three independent experiments. #p < 0.001, when compared with control group. **p < 0.01 and ***p < 0.001, when compared with LPS alone group by Student t-test. (IBE: I. batatas-ethylacetate, LPS: Lipopolysaccharide, TNF-α: Tumor necrosis factor-alpha)

2. Protective effect on liver, renal, blood pressure

Study showed that consumption of anthocyanin from purple sweet potato (APSP) significantly reduced levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the blood, and liver and renal systems. APSP could reduce the urea and creatinine levels, which are indicative of improved renal function. In addition, APSP could decrease serum glutamate oxalacetate transaminase (SGOT) and serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT) levels, indicative of protective activity of the extract on liver, and decrease systolic blood pressure.

Gastrointestinal Health

Purple sweet potato contains mixture of soluble fiber, which can lower cholesterol and balance glucose, and insoluble fiber, which helps to keep healthy bowels. It is are also a good source of prebiotics like oligosaccharides, which help to improve the balance gut bacteria and overall gut health.

Blood Sugar Regulation

While all sweet potato varieties impact blood sugar levels because of their carbohydrate content, purple sweet potatoes may exert less of an effect than other types due to their high concentration of polyphenol plant compounds. These compounds may decrease the absorption of starches in the intestines, therefore minimizing purple sweet potato’s impact on blood sugar levels
