It is made from non-GMO peas, especially suitable for health drinks, cereal snack foods, baked foods, meat products and healthcare products. It contains at least 85% protein. It is also used as a functional ingredient in food manufacturing, such as a thickener, foaming agent, or emulsifier as it has good solubility and outstanding dispersion in water. In culinary products, pea protein displays very good meat-binding properties or even texture (meat substitute) in different applications.

Belonging to the legume family, peas either yellow or green are found throughout the world, with the world’s top producers being Russia, China, India, Canada and the United States. Pea protein is derived from ground yellow split peas (Pisum sativum) and via a series of mechanical and chemical separations. The mechanical process split the dry seeds involves husking, or dehulling, the seeds. This removal of the outer coating of the seed allows for easy division of the pea into its two cotyledons. The split pea seed is milled into flour and then the protein is extracted via separation, hydrolysis and drying to yield concentrated and purified protein to preserve its functional properties.

Two scoops of pea protein (30g) contain 120 calories and around 26 g of protein. Pea protein is low in sugar and carbs and is vegan-friendly because it contains no animal ingredients. Pea protein is not derived from 1 of the 8 most common allergenic foods (milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, fish, shellfish, and wheat), allowing another option for those following restricted diets. Nutritionally, peas are not technically a complete protein as most vegetarian proteins are missing at least 1 essential amino acid from their protein profile.

Plant-based protein powder can help build muscle when paired with consistent exercise. Pea protein powder loses most of the fiber and starch when processed. This means they allow maximum digestibility and absorption after consumption. After a workout, the muscle tissue is torn and needs an immediate supply of the right amino acids to repair these tears and layer extra muscle fiber over the top. The highly digestible and absorbable nature of pea protein is suitable to be taken before or after a workout and get amino acids to the rescue quickly.

Peas are high in lysine, the precursor to carnitine which helps convert fatty acids into energy. It’s also a good source of iron, with 20 per cent of the daily value. Pea protein is also a good option for increasing protein intake and boosting feelings of fullness as dairy-based protein powders. Pea protein contains all nine of the essential amino acids and also has arginine which is good for the heart and promotes the flow of blood throughout the body. It’s also high in iron and low in fat.

Direction of Use

Add 1/8 teaspoon to 6 tablespoons or 0.2% to 6% of total weight or as needed. Mix, top or blend in water, smoothies, beverages, ice cream, kuih-muih, cake, jam, jelly, pudding, snacks, biscuits, desserts, dressing & recipes. (Depends on personal preferences)
