Pandan leaf (Pandanus amaryllifolius) is one of Malaysia’s signature culinary and functional botanicals. There are three commercial methods used to produce Pandan extract for B2B supply, each suited to different end-applications.
Method 1 — Solvent extraction (liquid extract)
Fresh or briefly-dried Pandan leaves are extracted in food-grade ethanol-water solution, then concentrated under vacuum to a syrupy liquid. This is the highest-yield method and captures the full flavour and colour profile.
- Best for: Liquid F&B applications — beverages, syrups, ice cream, sauces.
- Shelf life: 18–24 months refrigerated, 12 months ambient.
- MOQ (Bionutricia): 100 L.
- Colour: Vivid emerald green.
Method 2 — Spray-dry powder
The liquid extract is spray-dried with a carrier (maltodextrin or gum arabic) to produce a free-flowing green powder. Easier to handle in dry beverage, bakery and dry-mix applications. - Shelf life: 24 months ambient.

- Colour: Bright emerald to olive green (slight colour loss vs liquid).
Method 3 — Steam-distillation hydrosol
Fresh Pandan leaves are steam-distilled, producing a water-phase hydrosol that captures the volatile aroma compounds (2-acetyl-1-pyrroline is the signature). Lower yield but the “cleanest” aroma extract.
- Best for: Premium beverage, fine-fragrance, cosmetic, natural flavour.
- Shelf life: 12 months refrigerated.
- MOQ (Bionutricia): 50 L.
- Colour: Pale yellow-green (no chlorophyll carryover).
