Broccoli extract powder is a 20:1 extract of Brassica oleracea floret, standardised on sulforaphane — the active isothiocyanate formed from broccoli's glucoraphanin, measured by HPLC. Bionutricia Extract supplies it in bulk to B2B and OEM formulators from a JAKIM Halal, FSSC 22000, US FDA-registered, GMP, HACCP and MeSTI facility in Malaysia, with a Certificate of Analysis on every lot.

What is broccoli extract powder?
Broccoli (Brassica oleracea) is a cruciferous vegetable whose florets are the richest common dietary source of the glucosinolate glucoraphanin. Bionutricia's broccoli extract powder is a 20:1 concentrate of the floret, standardised on sulforaphane — the bioactive compound broccoli is prized for — delivering a defined, water-soluble powder in place of variable fresh vegetable. For a formulator this gives a documented sulforaphane marker and consistent batches.
Active compound & standardisation
Broccoli stores its activity as the stable glucosinolate glucoraphanin. When plant tissue is disrupted, the enzyme myrosinase converts glucoraphanin into the active isothiocyanate sulforaphane. Bionutricia standardises on sulforaphane content (with glucoraphanin as the precursor marker), measured by HPLC — the value marker for any broccoli ingredient — with the figure reported on the batch Certificate of Analysis.
How sulforaphane works in the body (mechanism)
Sulforaphane is the most-studied dietary activator of the Nrf2-Keap1-ARE pathway. By modifying cysteine residues on Keap1, sulforaphane releases the transcription factor Nrf2, which switches on a battery of phase-II cytoprotective and antioxidant genes — NQO1, heme-oxygenase-1 (HO-1), glutathione-S-transferases and enzymes of glutathione synthesis. Sulforaphane also dampens NF-κB signalling. This dual "switch on antioxidant defence, switch down inflammatory signalling" mechanism is the scientific basis for the broad research interest in broccoli. Mechanism is provided as scientific background on the compound; it is not a claim that this ingredient treats, cures or prevents any condition.
Clinical evidence on sulforaphane
Most human sulforaphane trials use broccoli sprout preparations (which are far richer in glucoraphanin than florets) and study specific patient groups. The evidence below is attributed to the cited studies and provided as scientific context — not as a performance claim for this floret-extract ingredient. Because our SKU is a floret extract, dose comparisons to sprout studies should not be made directly.
| Study | Design | Result (attributed to the study) |
|---|---|---|
| Singh et al. 2014, PNAS (Johns Hopkins) | Double-blind RCT, n=44 (29 sulforaphane / 15 placebo), 50-150 µmol/day, 18 weeks | Improved ABC and SRS behavioural scores vs placebo in the studied group |
| Yanaka et al. 2009, Cancer Prev Res | RCT, n=48, broccoli sprouts 70 g/day (~420 µmol precursor), 8 weeks | Reduced markers of H. pylori colonisation vs placebo |
| ESCAPE (Traka et al.) | 12-month glucoraphanin-rich broccoli dietary intervention, men on active surveillance | Transcriptional changes in prostate tissue reported |
These are patient-population and sprout-based studies; glucoraphanin content differs greatly between sprouts and florets. They describe the compound, not a Bionutricia finished product. The objective quality metric for this ingredient is its CoA sulforaphane/glucoraphanin content.

Applications
As a water-soluble 20:1 concentrate dosed at 100-300 mg, broccoli extract blends into powder and liquid systems. Bionutricia supplies the bulk ingredient for B2B formulation; brand owners and manufacturers formulate it into their chosen finished format — capsules, tablets and sachets, greens and detox blends, functional beverages and bakery — carrying a documented sulforaphane level.
Why source broccoli extract from Bionutricia?
