Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus)

 

Jackfruit, with scientific name Artocarpus heterophyllus is a tropical climacteric fruit, belonging to Moraceae family. It is native to South India and widely grown in Asia, Africa, and some regions in South America. It is known to be the largest tree-borne fruit in the world. Jackfruit has a spiky outer skin, with thick yellow flesh and edible seeds and pods. The flesh has a sweet, distinctive flavor, which some describe as a combination of fruits including apples, pineapples, mangoes and bananas.

Jackfruit is rich in nutrients including carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals. Moreover, it is one of the rare fruits that is rich in B-complex group of vitamins and contains very good amounts of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), niacin, riboflavin, and folic acid.

Phenolic compounds from jackfruit are artocarpesin, norartocarpetin and oxyresveratrol. These three compounds exhibited potent anti-inflammatory activity.

Study showed that phenolic compounds from jackfruit, Artocarpesin suppressed the production of proinflammatory mediators in lipopolysaccharide LPS-induced production of nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E 2 (PGE 2) through the down-regulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) protein expressions.
