Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus)

Jackfruit, with scientific name Artocarpus heterophyllus is a tropical climacteric fruit, belonging to Moraceae family. It is native to South India and widely grown in Asia, Africa, and some regions in South America. It is known to be the largest tree-borne fruit in the world. Jackfruit has a spiky outer skin, with thick yellow flesh and edible seeds and pods. The flesh has a sweet, distinctive flavor, which some describe as a combination of fruits including apples, pineapples, mangoes and bananas.

Jackfruit is rich in nutrients including carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals. Moreover, it is one of the rare fruits that is rich in B-complex group of vitamins and contains very good amounts of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), niacin, riboflavin, and folic acid.

Phenolic compounds from jackfruit are artocarpesin, norartocarpetin and oxyresveratrol. These three compounds exhibited potent anti-inflammatory activity.

1. Anti-inflammatory

Jackfruit exhibit potential anti-inflammatory activity. Study showed that phenolic compounds from jackfruit, Artocarpesin suppressed the production of proinflammatory mediators in lipopolysaccharide LPS-induced production of nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E 2 (PGE 2) through the down-regulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) protein expressions.

2. Support Immune Health

Jackfruit can help to alleviate inflammation and enhance immune barrier function. A study revealed that Polysaccharides from jackfruit pulp showed a protective effect on intestinal function through downregulated the inflammatory genes (TNF-α, IL-6) and up-regulated the free fatty acid receptors (GPR41 and GPR43) and tight junction protein (Occludin) mediate immune function in the small intestine.

Blood Sugar Control

Jackfruit has a fairly low glycemic index (GI) attributed to the fiber it provides, which slows digestion and helps prevent blood sugar spikes. Jackfruit also provides some protein, which may help prevent blood sugar levels from rising too quickly after a meal

Protect Against Disease

Jackfruit contains high amount of vitamin C, which is a powerful antioxidant that is essential for a healthy immune system. It helps prevent inflammation that can lead to chronic disease like heart disease and cancer.

Help with Weight Loss

Jackfruit is rich with fiber, it helps to achieve daily fiber intake. Consuming enough fiber each day is key to achieving weight loss goals because it keeps body feeling full. Jackfruit is also low-calorie, help keeping caloric intake down.

Improve Sleep Quality

Jackfruit contains magnesium, a mineral linked with helping the body relax. Magnesium can contribute to improving the quality of your sleep.
