Most botanical extract powders are not inherently allergenic — the allergen usually enters through the carrier or emulsifier added during drying. The most common culprit is sodium caseinate, a milk protein used to emulsify oil powders, which becomes a declarable allergen on every finished product it touches. Choosing an arabic-gum emulsified powder removes that declaration entirely. Which allergens actually appear in botanical extract powders?
A standardised botanical extract starts as plant material, so in most cases the botanical itself is not on any allergen list. The regulated allergens — the EU Annex II list, the US “big nine”, and their equivalents in ASEAN and GCC markets — cover milk, egg, fish, crustaceans, molluscs, tree nuts, peanuts, soy, cereals containing gluten, sesame, lupin, celery, mustard and sulphites. Very few of those overlap with a typical herbal or fruit extract.
The allergen almost always arrives with something added around the extract. Three routes account for nearly all of it:
- The carrier or emulsifier. A liquid extract or an oil has to be converted into a free-flowing powder, and that requires a carrier system. Some of the common choices are allergenic — sodium caseinate (milk), soy protein isolate (soy), whey (milk) and wheat-derived maltodextrin in certain markets.
- The raw botanical itself, in a handful of cases. Sesame, lupin, celery, mustard, tree nuts and gluten-bearing cereals are all botanicals. If your ingredient is one of them, or is processed alongside them, it is an allergen in its own right.
- Cross-contact on shared equipment. A dryer, mill or blender that has run an allergenic product can carry residue into the next batch unless changeover cleaning is validated.
For the brand owner, the practical consequence is simple: the allergen status of your finished capsule, sachet or beverage is inherited from the bulk ingredient you buy. You cannot declare a product dairy-free if the ingredient inside it is emulsified on a milk protein.
Why sodium caseinate is the hidden allergen in oil powders
Turning an oil into a powder is not a drying problem, it is an emulsification problem. The oil has to be dispersed into a water phase, held there as a stable emulsion, and then dried so that each particle carries oil inside a protective wall. That wall material is the emulsifier, and the industry default for decades has been sodium caseinate, because it emulsifies extremely well and is inexpensive.
Sodium caseinate is a milk protein. That single fact carries three consequences that most buyers only discover late in a project:
- It is a declarable allergen. Milk appears on Annex II and on every equivalent list. It has to be named on the finished-product label, which changes your pack copy and your consumer reach.
- It ends the vegan and dairy-free claim. An oil powder built on caseinate cannot be positioned as vegan, plant-based or dairy-free, no matter how plant-based the oil inside it is.
- It complicates halal and religious-dietary review. An animal-derived input invites additional scrutiny in halal certification and in vegetarian assessments, and adds documentation load at export.
None of this is a defect in caseinate as a food ingredient. It is simply a set of downstream costs that a brand owner absorbs, often without having been told at the specification stage that the emulsifier was animal-derived at all.
How arabic gum emulsification removes the declaration
Arabic gum — the dried exudate of Acacia species — is the alternative we use across our entire oil-powder range. It is a plant hydrocolloid that functions as both an emulsifier and a wall material, so it performs the job caseinate was doing without introducing an animal protein.

What “clean label” actually means on a bulk ingredient
Clean label is a marketing term with no legal definition, which is exactly why it needs to be pinned down at the specification stage. For a bulk botanical ingredient, it is usually understood to mean four things:
- A short, recognisable ingredient declaration — the extract plus a carrier a consumer can identify, rather than a list of processing aids.
- No synthetic additives — no artificial emulsifiers, anti-caking agents, colours or preservatives added to the powder.
- No unnecessary allergens — nothing added that forces a declaration the product did not need.
- Traceable identity — species, plant part and extraction ratio stated, and evidenced per lot.
The gap between a clean-label claim and a clean-label reality is almost always in the carrier system. When you compare two quotations for the same extract, the difference in price frequently reflects a difference in what the powder is built on — and that difference lands on your label, not on the supplier’s.
How to verify an allergen claim before you commit
Ask for these five things, in writing, before you approve an ingredient:
- A signed allergen statement naming every regulated allergen and stating present, absent, or absent-but-handled-on-site for each.
- The full carrier and emulsifier declaration — not just “carrier”, but which one, and its botanical or animal origin.
- The cross-contact position — what else runs on the same line, and how changeover cleaning is validated.
- A batch-specific Certificate of Analysis, not a generic specification sheet. The CoA is the document that ties a claim to the drum in front of you.
- Supporting certification — a food-safety system that manages allergens as a controlled hazard rather than as a paperwork exercise.
If a supplier can answer the first two immediately and evidence the third and fourth per lot, the claim is generally sound. If the emulsifier is described only as “proprietary”, treat the allergen status as unresolved until it is named.
