“Vitamin E” is not one molecule — it is a family of eight. Four tocopherols and four tocotrienols, each with α, β, γ and δ forms. Almost everything sold as Vitamin E is a single member of that family: α-tocopherol. The eight vitamers, and why the label rarely tells you which one you’re buying

The Vitamin E family shares a common design: a chromanol ring — the chemically active head — attached to a long lipid tail. What varies is two things. The number and position of methyl groups on the ring gives the α, β, γ and δ designations. The saturation of the tail splits the family in two.

A tocopherol has a saturated phytyl tail: a straight, flexible, fully hydrogenated chain. A tocotrienol has an unsaturated farnesyl tail carrying three double bonds. Those double bonds put kinks in the chain, and a kinked tail behaves differently inside a lipid membrane than a straight one — it occupies space differently and moves differently. This is the structural reason the two families are not interchangeable, and the reason a formulator specifying “Vitamin E” without saying which vitamer has not really specified anything.

What d-α-tocomonoenol actually is

Look at the table above and there is an obvious gap between zero double bonds and three. Tocomonoenol fills it. It has one double bond in the side chain, which makes it a genuine structural intermediate — neither a tocopherol nor a tocotrienol, but a distinct vitamer with its own identity.

It is uncommon. Tocomonoenols were first characterised relatively recently compared with the rest of the family, have been reported in certain marine and plant sources, and are not something a standard Vitamin E process is designed to preserve. Most commercial tocotrienol concentrates are produced in ways that isolate and enrich the tocotrienol fraction specifically; a minor vitamer that sits outside that fraction tends not to survive the process, and in most cases is never looked for in the first place.

An honest note on the figure. d-α-tocomonoenol is present in Bionutricia’s tocotrienol powder. We have not yet assayed how much, and so we publish no number for it. We would rather declare a component as present and unquantified than put a figure on a spec sheet that our own laboratory has not measured. When the assay is complete, the number goes on the specification — and not before.

Why “full spectrum” is a real distinction and not a marketing word

The commercial Vitamin E market is dominated by α-tocopherol for straightforward reasons: it is the vitamer with the longest regulatory history, it is the one that historical potency conventions were built around, and it is the cheapest to produce at scale, including synthetically. None of that makes it representative of Vitamin E as it occurs in a plant.

A material that carries all four tocotrienol isomers alongside tocopherol — and, in this case, a tocomonoenol as well — is closer to the composition of the source material it came from. For a brand owner, that is a positioning asset with a factual basis behind it, which is a rarer thing than it sounds. It is also a formulation consideration: the isomer distribution affects how the material behaves in a lipid matrix, and a spec that reports only a single “total tocotrienol %” conceals that distribution entirely.

What to ask a Vitamin E supplier

  • Give me the isomer breakdown, not a total. How much α, β, γ and δ tocotrienol individually? How much tocopherol?
  • Is any other vitamer present? If the supplier has never looked, they cannot answer — and that itself is informative.
  • How was it measured, and how often? Per lot, or once when the specification was written?
  • Natural-source or synthetic? And what is the plant origin?
  • If it is a powder, what is the carrier? See below — this one catches people out.

The carrier question, which matters more than most buyers realise

Vitamin E is oil-soluble, so a powdered version has to be emulsified onto something. The industry default is sodium caseinate — which is milk-derived. That single upstream choice hands the finished-product brand three problems: a declarable Annex II allergen, the loss of any vegan or dairy-free claim, and an animal-derived material to explain in halal review.
