Bionutricia’s Patented Liposomal Encapsulation Technology: A Technical Overview

This is a technical overview of the liposomal encapsulation process Bionutricia uses for halal nutraceutical contract manufacturing. The process is protected by a Malaysian patent (MyIPO) issued to Bionutricia Manufacturing Sdn Bhd.

Process steps

  1. Phospholipid hydration. Food-grade sunflower-derived phosphatidylcholine is hydrated in purified water at controlled temperature and pH.
  2. Active payload incorporation. Water-soluble actives (Vit C, glutathione, magnesium ascorbate) are dissolved in the aqueous phase. Lipid-soluble actives (Vit D3, curcumin, CoQ10) are pre-dissolved in the lipid phase.
  3. High-shear emulsification. The mixture is processed through a high-shear homogeniser to form initial liposomes.
  4. Size reduction. Microfluidisation reduces mean particle size to the target 100–200 nm range.
  5. Quality control. Each batch is assayed for particle size, polydispersity index, encapsulation efficiency, and active payload.
  6. Optional spray-dry. For capsulable powder format, liposomes are spray-dried at controlled inlet temperature with a trehalose protective carrier.

Actives we encapsulate

Bionutricia’s liposomal line is validated for:

  • Vitamin C (ascorbic acid and sodium ascorbate)
  • Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol)
  • Glutathione (reduced form)
  • Magnesium (as magnesium ascorbate or glycinate)
  • Curcumin (95% curcuminoid extract)
  • CoQ10 (ubiquinone and ubiquinol)
  • NAD+ precursor (nicotinamide riboside)
  • Custom actives — feasibility study available

What the patent covers

The patent covers the specific combination of process parameters (phospholipid ratio, shear profile, microfluidisation pass count, spray-dry carrier system) optimised for halal nutraceutical actives in a Malaysian manufacturing environment. We are not claiming a fundamental novelty in liposomal chemistry — liposomal encapsulation as a category is a well-established food-pharma technique.

What makes our process different from non-patented alternatives

  • Halal supplier-level certification. The phospholipid source, processing aids and equipment sanitation are JAKIM-audited.
  • Spray-dry validated for downstream sachet/stickpack formats (brand owner may further encapsulate at their own facility). Most Asian liposomal contract manufacturers offer only liquid format. Bionutricia Extract ships both bulk liposomal liquid concentrate (5 kg bottle / 25 kg drum) and bulk spray-dry liposomal powder (5 kg / 10 kg pack) — all for brand-owner downstream formulation. Patent: MY-198945-A, Process for Preparing Nutritional Powder Extract. Bionutricia Extract ships bulk liposomal liquid concentrate (5 kg bottle / 25 kg drum) plus bulk spray-dry liposomal powder (5 kg / 10 kg pack), AND sells Bionutricia’s own-brand consumer SKU — Liposomal Vitamin C in 10 fruit-extract flavours. Patent MY-198945-A. Custom-brand liposomal SKUs under another label are handled via OEM/ODM at sister division bionutricia.com. powder for brand-owner downstream formulation.
  • Encapsulation efficiency > 90% across our standard active list, vs the 60–75% typical in lower-cost facilities.
  • Particle size consistency. PDI ≤ 0.3 batch-to-batch.

Cost expectation

Liposomal manufacturing is more expensive than standard supplement manufacturing — the phospholipid is the largest single cost driver. Expect per-unit cost roughly 2.5–4x a standard equivalent. Brand-side ROI typically comes from premium positioning, not cost parity.
