What are pesticide MRLs, and why do they matter for extracts?

A maximum residue limit is the highest concentration of a specific pesticide legally permitted in a food or ingredient, set compound by compound and market by market. For a botanical extract sold across borders, MRLs are a gating compliance requirement: a shipment that exceeds the destination market’s limit for even one residue can be detained, rejected or recalled. Field-grown botanicals carry the highest risk, because pesticides applied in cultivation can persist into the harvested plant. That makes pesticide screening a core part of a buyer’s due diligence — not an optional extra.

Why extraction concentrates residues — the point buyers miss

This is the single most important idea in the topic. An extract is a concentrate: a 10:1 extract takes roughly ten parts of raw botanical down to one part of finished powder. Fat- or matrix-bound pesticide residues can concentrate along the same path. So a raw herb that tested comfortably under an MRL can, once extracted, carry a residue level several times higher — potentially over the limit. The practical consequence: a pesticide result on the raw material does not clear the extract. The residue screen has to be run on the finished extract, at the extraction ratio the buyer is actually purchasing. Any supplier who offers only a raw-material residue certificate has not answered the question that matters.
