Misai Kucing (Orthosiphon stamineus), known internationally as “Java Tea” or “Cat’s Whiskers,” is one of the most-researched Malaysian botanicals for urinary-tract and renal-support supplement categories. This guide covers the two active markers used in commercial OEM specs.
The two industry-standard active markers
Rosmarinic acid
A polyphenolic compound found across the Lamiaceae family (mint, sage, rosemary, and Misai Kucing). Commercial premium spec is ≥ 0.8% rosmarinic acid by HPLC. Value tier runs at ≥ 0.3%.
Sinensetin
A polymethoxylated flavone specific to Orthosiphon. Sinensetin is the chemotaxonomic marker that distinguishes genuine O. stamineus extract from adulteration with cheaper Lamiaceae plants. Commercial premium spec: ≥ 0.1% sinensetin. Value tier: ≥ 0.05%.
Why both matter
Rosmarinic acid alone is a weak identity test because it’s present in many other plants. Sinensetin alone is a strong identity test but less correlated with bioactivity. Requiring both on the COA gives the brand owner both quality and identity assurance.
