Tocotrienols aren’t commonly found in nature and when they are, they tend to occur at very low levels. However, palm, rice bran, and barley oils contain tocotrienols, as well as wheat germ and oats.
Palm oil is the most concentrated natural source of tocotrienols, but even so, you would have to consume an entire cup of palm oil each day to ingest the amount of tocotrienols that experts suggest may have beneficial effects on health.
Tocotrienols are a less common form of vitamin E than tocopherols. This is because there are more tocopherols in people’s diets and some vitamin E supplements consist exclusively of tocopherols.
Tocotrienols are isoprenoids with an unsaturated phytyl chain. This unique structural configuration allows tocotrienols to cross saturated fatty layers of tissue more readily, thus likely favouring greater anticancer effects. The concentration of tocotrienols in human plasma and tissues is lower than tocopherols due to faster degradation. However, tocotrienols accumulate within cells at significantly higher concentrations as compared to tocopherols. The bioavailability of tocotrienols is dependent on multiple factors including shorter half-life, the presence of tocopherols, food processing, and nutritional status. The ability to achieve a better uniform distribution in the phospholipid bilayer of the plasma membrane makes tocotrienols better antioxidants than tocopherols.
