Oat is an important food grain in temperate regions of the world. It is an annual crop used for both human and animal nutrition. With the development in field of nutrition, oat was recognized as a healthy food in the mid 1980s signifying that a substance in it helped prevent heart disease and therefore it became more popular for human nutrition. Oat is a staple in Germany, Ireland, Scotland, and the Scandinavian countries. Instant oat flakes are produced by adopting a series of steaming, boiling, drying and flaking technology.
The instant oat flakes are pulverized into oat powder which has small particle size to increase its solubility in water. Instant oat powder contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. Water-soluble fiber in oat is composed of non-starchy polysaccharides such as b-glucan. Water-soluble dietary fiber can form viscous solutions. Increased viscosity in the intestine slows intestinal transit, delays gastric emptying and slows glucose and sterol absorption in the intestine.
The soluble fiber from oat is very effective to lower total blood cholesterol and bad cholesterol (LDL). LDL is known to cause clogs in arteries and damage heart tissues. Therefore, consumption of oat has been well known to be able to cut down the risks of heart attack and stroke. Beta-glucan fiber in oats can also help normalize blood sugar levels. It can increase the insulin sensitivity so it is suitable to be taken by individuals who have type 2 diabetes which is increasing due to lifestyle changes. Meanwhile, insoluble dietary fibers usually have high water-holding capacity, which contributes to increased fecal bulk.
*Direction of Use*
Add 1/8 teaspoon to 6 tablespoon or 0.2% to 6% of total weight or as needed. Mix, top or blend in water, smoothies, beverages, ice-cream, kuih-muih, cake, jam, jelly, pudding, snacks, biscuits, desserts, dressing & recipes.
For Baking: Means need to add 0.2g-60g of the extract to make a 1kg cake. (Depends on personal preferences)
