STANDARDIZED  Manjakani Extract

Quercus infectoria

Quercus infectoria, one of the popular medicinal plants used traditionally in postpartum care and treatment of various ailments. This plant is a small tree or shrub about two meters high and is mainly found in Asia, Greece, and Iran. Its galls are round-shaped abnormal growth found arising on the young branches of the oak tree due to the attack by the stinging gall-wasp. The galls of Quercus infectoria are globular in shape and from 10 to 25 mm in diameter. They have a short, basal stalk and numerous rounded projections on the surface. They are hard and heavy, usually sinking in water.

In Malaysia, the galls known as “biji manjakani”, which have been used among Malays to restore postpartum uterine elasticity and also stimulate the contraction of vaginal muscles. The old folk’s women believed that “manjakani” is a ‘magical’ fruit that has many usage especially to women. In Indian traditional medicine, it is a constituent of toothpowder or toothpaste for treatment of gum and oral cavity diseases. Tannins specifically gallotannin which constituted for almost 50-70% of Q. infectoria galls were reported to demonstrate most of the anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal activities. Apart from that, a small amount of gallic acid (2-4%) and ellagic acid were also present in the gall extracts.

Bone Health

In vitro study on effect of Manjakani extract on bone

SubjectHuman osteoblast cell line model
Duration of the study14 days
Dosage10.30 μg/mL
Groups• Negative control • Positive control: pamidronate • Treatment group
Parameters analysed• Bone formation markers level (ALP and osteocalcin) • Light microscopy on bone-forming cells
Function QI gall extract might be a potent anabolic agent that stimulate osteoblastic activity and potentially used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis.Visible benefits • Small concentrations of QI gall extract were able to enhance bone formation better compared to pamidronate. • QI gall extract increased cell proliferation by increasing the level of bone formation markers (ALP and osteocalcin) secreted by the osteoblast cells.
