Redcurrant (Ribes rubrum)

Redcurrant scientifically known as Ribes rubrum is a member of the genus Ribes from gooseberry family. It is widely cultivated in Europe. The fruits are small translucent ruby red berries grown in clusters on the fruit branches. Redcurrant contains high level of vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese and potassium.

 

Ascorbic acid, anthocyanins, and flavonoids are bioactive compounds present in red currants. The most abundant anthocyanins in red currants is cyanidin 3-glycosides

Study showed that redcurrants possess α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. Phenolic compounds present in redcurrants: chlorogenic acid and protocatechuic acid slow down carbohydrate absorption by inhibiting the glucose transport.

α-amylase and α-glucosidase are key enzymes that break down carbohydrates. Inhibiting the activity of these two enzymes can control postprandial hyperglycemia, and reduce the risk of developing diabetes.
