STANDARDIZED Misai Kucing

Orthosiphon aristatus / Orthosiphon stamineus

Cats Whiskers (Orthosiphon aristatus / Orthosiphon stamineus) is a medicinal herb found mainly throughout southern China, the Indian Subcontinent, South East Asia and tropical Queensland. It is known as Kumis Kucing in Indonesia and Misai Kucing in Malaysia. The plant has white or purple color flowers giving the impression of cat’s whiskers. It has lots of leaves and the leaves are widely used for herbal teas (Java Tea) in South-East Asia.

Traditionally, the infusion of dried leaves is used for treating rheumatic pain and coughs. The fresh leaves are used to prepare strong decoction for treating a wide variety of ailments, such as gout, renal inflammation, kidney stones, and hypertension due to the diuretic action. It is also consumed as general tonic for detoxification and relieving tiredness.

A wide range of flavonoids were detected in various tissues of Orthosiphon stamineus such as rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid, quercetin, eupatorin,and sinensetin.

Function • Misai Kucing aqueous extract is effective for alleviating hyperglycemia and improving lipid profile in diabetic individuals. • It has direct stimulatory effect on insulin secretion from the pancreatic beta cells.Visible benefits • The extract (0.2–1.0 g/kg) significantly decreased plasma glucose concentration in both normal and diabetic rats. • The extract at 1.0 g/kg was most effective in decreasing plasma glucose concentrations and comparable to standard drug. • Plasma HDL-cholesterol concentration was significantly increased in diabetic rats treated with the extract.

• Oral administration of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 g/kg of extracts significantly reduced serum urate level of hyperuricemic rats at 6th hour, which is comparable to the standard allopurinol.
