Almond (Prunus amygdalus)

Prunus amygdalus (Almond)

Almonds (Prunus amygdalus) are the seed of a fruit from the almond tree. Like cherries, peaches, and plums, that fruit is a stone fruit, having a fleshy fruit exterior and a pit on the inside. People often group them with nuts and consider them to be a high protein option. In addition to being high in protein, almonds are loaded with antioxidants.

Almonds are mainly used in confectionery for manufacturing nougat, marzipan and a wide range of other sweet delights. They are greatly enjoyed in fresh form or dried form. The almonds you can buy in stores usually have the shell removed, revealing the edible nut inside. They are sold either raw or roasted.

Almond is versatile with sweet flavour and can be easily incorporated in the diet plan as it can be eaten at anytime in any form. It is usually eaten as snacks. It is usually used as flavour enhancer in bakery as it is gluten free. It is used in ketogenic diet. Due to the natural sweet taste and rich essence, it can be added in desserts, bakery goods or used as garnishes. Almond cookies and biscuits are very common sweet dishes that has almond added to increase the aroma. Almond milk are also one of the old folk’s favourite drink.

Our almond protein powder is produced by spray drying the almond milk into powder with maximum protein and healthy fatty acids recovered. It can be used as a food ingredient as it contains as high as 50% protein content which can be incorporated into meal replacement diet and it is suitable to be consumed by people in all ages.

HEALTH BENEFITS

High in antioxidant

In vivo study on effect of almond’s antioxidant activity
Subject Healthy male soldiers who are habitual smokers (n=60)
Group (1) Non smoker
(2) Smoker
(3) Smoker + Treatment
Duration 4 weeks
Dosage 84g almond daily
Parameters analyzed Blood and urine test
Outcomes Visible benefits
-After the almond intervention, serum alpha-tocopherol, SOD, and GPX increased significantly in smokers by 10, 35, and 16%, respectively
-8-OHdG, MDA, and DNA strand breaks decreased significantly by 28, 34, and 23% in smokers after almond intervention.

Funtions Almond intake can enhance antioxidant defenses and diminish biomarkers of oxidative stress in smokers.

Improve Cardiovascular System

In vivo study on effect of almond on cardiovascular disease
Subject Overweight women (n=100)
Group (1) Without almond
(2) With almond
Duration 3 months
Dosage 50g almond daily
Parameters analyzed Weight, BMI, waist circumference, waist to hip circumference ratio, total cholesterol, and triglyceride
Outcomes

Weight, BMI, waist circumference, waist to hip circumference ratio, total cholesterol, and triglyceride, fasting blood sugar and diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly in the almond group compared to the nut-free group.

Functions Almond enriched diet led to a greater weight-loss and overall better improvements in cardiovascular disease risk factors.

Healthy for Heart

In vivo study on effect of almond on heart disease
Subject Healthy men (n=75)
Group (1) Without almond
(2) With almond
Duration 1 month
Dosage 50g almond daily
Parameters analyzed Plasma lipid and blood oxidative level
Outcomes Visible benefits
-Plasma α -tocopherol/cholesterol ratios were significantly elevated by almond intervention
-In the almond-consuming groups, flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) improved and systolic blood pressure
reduced significantly.
Functions Almond-enriched diet can increase plasma α -tocopherol and improve vascular function

Control Cholesterol

In vivo study on effect of almond on cholesterol
Subject Overweight women (n=46)
Group (1) Without almond
(2) With almond
Duration 8 weeks
Dosage 20g
Parameters analyzed Blood pressure, glucose levels, lipid profile, and plasma fatty acids, as well as apolipoproteins, angiopoietin-like-3, and cholesteryl ester transfer protein expression
Outcomes Visible benefits
The consumption of almonds reduced waist circumference, cholesteryl ester transfer protein expression, and increased high-density lipoprotein concentrations compared with almond-free diet.
Functions Almond can reduce abdominal adiposity and improve HDL in overweight and obese women.

Healthy for Brain

In vivo study on effect of almond on cognitive function
Subject Rats (n=8)
Group (1) Pretreatment with almond + scopolamine
(2) Without pretreatment with almond + scopolamine
(3) Negative control
Duration 28 days
Dosage 400 mg/kg
Parameters analyzed Blood oxidative level
Outcomes Visible benefits
-Scopolamine injection impaired the memory function which was accompanied by increased oxidative stress as evident by increased brain malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and reduced activities of antioxidant enzymes as compared to healthy controls.
-Pre-treatment with almond significantly ameliorated scopolamine-induced oxidative stress and memory dysfunction.
Functions Dietary almond supplementation may reduce the risk of oxidative stress-induced memory loss and delay the onset of age-related memory impairment.
